Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to collect a sample?
- A one-litre sample usually takes less than 5 minutes with the most commonly used filters. See the Data Sheet above for more information.
What battery should I use?
- The only approved battery is the Makita LXT 18V battery. Use of any other batter will void the product warranty and potentially damage the pump.
Is the Surface Sampler waterproof?
- The Surface Sampler has been designed to be splash-resistant. The occasional light splash or dribble of water, fresh or salt, will be fine. The sampler should not be exposed to excessive rain, submerged, or washed down. Product damage due to water ingress is not covered under the Surface Sampler Warranty.
Can I mount the Surface Sampler inside of my own custom case?
-
The surface Sampler features M3 threaded inserts situated in a rectangular pattern measuring 112.5 mm x 75.0 mm that can be used to design custom mounts for the pump. Do not use screws that thread deeper than 8 mm into the mounting points, as this may puncture the internal base of the housing.
How do I know when the filter is saturated?
- You will know the filter is saturated when output water stream stops flowing.
Can I rent the eDNA Surface Samplers?
- No. Ocean Diagnostics does not currently rent the Surface Samplers.
What filters are compatible with the eDNA Surface Sampler?
- 45 micron Sterivex, 0.45-10 micron 47mm disc filters, 0.45-10 micron 30mm syringe type filters, and 0.45-10 micron 25mm syringe type filters. Filtration rates and saturation volumes may vary widely depending on filter type. Refer to the Surface Sampler data sheet above for more information.
Where can I buy replacement parts and tubing?
- Replacement parts and tubing are stocked and available with express shipping from Ocean Diagnostics.
How do I clean and sterilize the Surface Sampler?
- The Surface Sampler rarely requires sterilization thanks to its filter-first design, which prevents cross-contamination between samples. When needed, the pump can be disinfected with a short flush of 70% isopropyl alcohol followed by a rinse with deionized water. The standard procedure is presented in the user manual available above.
Can I use the output exhaust tube of the surface sampler to pump things?
- The Surface Sampler is designed to operate as a vacuum diaphragm pump. Any pressurization of the output stream can cause permanent damage to the diaphragms and the internal fluidics of the Surface Sampler and should be avoided.
