VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA – December 1, 2023 – Ocean Diagnostics has developed a Microplastics Educational Toolkit to equip Canadian middle and high schools with STEAM-based tools and technology to gain the skills needed to solve real-world environmental issues. Using scientific sampling activities, first-of-its-kind AI-based imaging technology and data analytics, Canadian educators can empower their students to become problem-solving environmental stewards.
“By introducing students to STEAM tools and technology, we hope to empower the next generation of environmental stewards with the skills they need to tackle pressing issues of their time,” says Ashleigh Erwin, Director of Marketing and Communications at Ocean Diagnostics.
Microplastics, plastic pieces less than five millimeters in size, have been found in all of Earth’s environments including our bodies. Addressing the problem at the source requires scientific data, creative thinking, collaboration and innovative technology. By introducing students to technology and nature-based learning in the classroom, they can collect and analyze data to understand sources and identify potential solutions. They gain skills for the workforce while learning the value of caring for and protecting the natural world.
Integrating educational technology in the classroom fosters early exposure to innovative thinking. As technology continues to shape our world, it's crucial to prepare students for a future where they can leverage high-tech to solve major environmental issues. The Saturna Imaging System, with its first-of-its-kind AI-based imaging technology, automates microplastics data collection. This empowers students to draw insights from educational technology and apply them to real-world scenarios, such as identifying microplastic sources.
Recognizing the critical role mentors play in shaping future environmental changemakers, the Toolkit supports educators with instructional resources aligned with British Columbia and Yukon curriculum and International Baccalaureate programmes, flexible suggested lesson plans, tech support and training videos.
