Students collect microplastics from beaches in qathet region

High school students in Powell River are making waves to help Beat Plastic Pollution.

Working with local environmental organization Let's Talk Trash, environmental science classes in qathet School District 47's Brooks Secondary School are monitoring microplastics on their local beaches using Ocean Diagnostics' Microplastics Community Science Toolkits.

Grade 11 student Rowan Cocksedge said she went on all three microplastics monitoring trips that the class attended, at Palm Beach, Second Beach and Okeover Inlet.

“I helped at specific stations, sifting through sand and collecting microplastics...We had to measure 100 metres on the beach and then pick four random numbers, where we would dig down in the sand and sift through the sand to collect microplastic. We had very clear instructions to guide us," says Rowan.
